Easy Camping Snacks: Trail-Ready PB&J Granola Bars

You know what beats munching on a plain ol’ store-bought granola bar when you’re out on the trail? A homemade one that tastes just like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich—but tougher than a hiking boot and built to survive a backpack tumble. That’s exactly what these PB&J granola bars are all about: comfort food flavor with serious trail toughness.

Store-bought snacks? Nah. Most of them are loaded with sugar and crash your energy faster than a canoe hitting a logjam. These bars? Packed with oats, nuts, seeds, and just enough sweetness to keep you climbing that hill without a meltdown (kids or grown-ups included).

Here’s the kicker—they’re crazy simple to whip up. Just mix, press, bake, and boom…you’ve got 16 golden, chewy squares ready for adventure. Wrap ’em in parchment paper, toss ’em in your daypack, and hit the trail. No squished sandwiches, no sticky fingers, no crumbs falling into your sleeping bag at night.

Plus, they’re totally customizable. Swap the jam flavor, trade sunflower seeds for pumpkin, or sneak in a sprinkle of chocolate chips (no judgment here). They’re gluten-free, vegetarian, and easy to make vegan too, so everyone around the campfire can grab a bite.

Whether you’re hiking up a ridge, setting up camp with the family, or just wrangling kids in the backyard, these bars are like little edible high-fives for your energy. Make a batch before your trip and you’ll have happy campers with full bellies, ready for s’mores later.

Plus, they’re crazy simple to make at home, wrap up, and toss in your daypack. No squished sandwiches, no sticky fingers—just happy campers and full bellies.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup peanut butter (Camper Bob says Valencia is top-notch if you can find it!)

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (or coconut butter to make it vegan)

  • ½ cup raspberry preserves (go sugar-free if you want it less sweet)

  • ½ cup honey, tapioca syrup, or coconut nectar

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 2 cups rolled oats (swap in spelt or barley flakes if you’re feeling wild)

  • ¼ cup hemp seeds

  • ¼ cup puffed quinoa

  • ¼ cup sunflower seeds

  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseeds

  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • Sea salt, to taste

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line an 8×8 baking dish with parchment paper and butter it up so nothing sticks.

  1. In a big ol’ bowl, mix the peanut butter, melted butter, raspberry preserves, honey, and vanilla. Stir like you mean it until it’s nice and smooth.
  2. Add the oats, hemp seeds, quinoa, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, cinnamon, and salt. Stir again until you’ve got a thick, sticky granola hug in your bowl.
  3. Dump it into the baking dish and press it down nice and flat (a spoon or your hands work great).
  4. Bake 35–40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and it feels firm.
  5. Let it cool, then slice into 16 bars. Store in a tin for a couple weeks, or wrap and freeze for longer adventures.
